Recent years have seen an increase in discussions around race, ethnicity and gender across many fields and professions, not least in education.
There are a number of colleagues in Higher Education who have gone above and beyond the regular stresses of being an educator by taking on the burden of shining a light on these issues where needed and also helping out others by making, curating and sharing resources that can be used to stimulate thinking among students and staff, and improve practice.
In July, 2021, Dr John Fernandes was kind enough to offer up a list of excellent resources that could support such conversations across disciplines but in particular, across the sports science/exercise/S&C/therapy field. This is a great example of collegiality and John deserves to have this recognised as such.
I have taken that list and with John's permission added it as a resource to my website with a few additions. This is a place that I use to store resources I know I will use again but also a place for sharing with others.
If you find any of this content useful please let John know as this type of work needs the recognition that it deserves.

Educate on the language
define the keys terms as it's impossible to navigate this area if the language isn't understood
Survey the perceptions of the current issues e.g. sexism, racism (it is imperative this is anonymous)
by this I mean asking them if X is an issue, and then if its important for X subject to be anti-discriminatory
there are people who are discriminatory and those who don't think it's an issue - knowing this will help monitor and change views
Highlight the magnitude and frequency of the issues;
Sport brings up loads of examples (unfortunately); Euro 2020, Lewis Hamilton post British GP, Norwegian Beach Handball team, treatment of Caster Semenya, Christine Mboma, CeCe Telfer and Beatrice Masilingi, banning of Soul Cap....and the list goes on.
Wider societal issues should/could also be considered too.
It isn't as self-explanatory as it might seem, so maybe detail why anti-discrimination is important
team cohesion, team output, team performance, improved physical and mental health etc
Outline how to be anti-discriminatory
ask students to feed in with their ideas
highlight the department/organisations stance on discrimination
Consider the framing and start point of this content. Some colleagues have found more success and engagement entering this topic from a less obvious start point but being prepared to have this as the main body of discussion.
