Maintenance of Behaviour Change

Behaviour change interventions can be effective in supporting individuals in achieving temporary behaviour change, however, maintenance of new behaviours is often difficult.

In 2016, Kwasnicka et al produced an excellent review of the evidence that explains successful behaviour change maintenance. This worksheet makes use of that review to provide the scaffold of a semi-structured “interview” that practitioners could hold with clients at a time where they should be moving into a maintenance phase of an “intervention”.

This resource is based on: Kwasnicka, D., Dombrowski, S. U., White, M., & Sniehotta, F. (2016). Theoretical explanations for maintenance of behaviour change: a systematic review of behaviour theories. Health Psychology Review, 10(3), 277-296. https://doi.org/10.1080/17437199.2016.1151372
