A Bodpod uses a technique known as Air Displacement Plethysmography to determine body composition. The method uses air displacement in a similar way that hydrostatic weighting measures water displacement.
Body Composition determined in this way has a strong correlation (r=0.96) to that determined by hydrostatic weighing (Dempster et al, 1995; Dixon et al, 2005)
